I have long believed that using cover letters does a great disservice to candidates. Sadly, though, the practice persists.
I never read a cover letter (or, worse, a so-called “motivation letter”) if it is longer than two or three lines, yet some candidates continue to send through long-winded cover letters that, while containing lots and lots of words, add very little. I can get everything I need from a well crafted and succinct CV and simply do not need a cover letter to rehash points made (or that should be made) in the CV.
We came across this article yesterday: “5 Reasons The Cover Letter Should Just Die Already”. Click the link. It is worth a read!
Bottom line: do yourself a favor and stop using long and boring cover letters!
