5 January 2016
The new year is always a time for reflection and, having spent time with family and friends, our thoughts begin to turn back to work.
As we return to our daily routine it often happens that the grass on the other side of the fence starts to look a little greener. Shotgun Sam and other less reputable recruiters know that the first couple of weeks back in the office after the holidays are when people are at their most vulnerable to their "charms" and they take advantage of this period to harvest CVs and churn the market.
He will ring you (and everyone else in the market) out of the blue and talk about a specific client who is very interested in your profile, but when you probe for specific details he will talk about client confidentiality or the need for secrecy or will simply name a firm that has recently advertised. If you agree to submit your profile or -- heaven forbid! -- your CV, it will be sent to every firm you can think of and more. If a firm shows any interest in your profile, this then becomes the firm that was interested in your profile in the first place and the "perfect opportunity" for you; if not, Shotgun Sam does not care, but you are effectively blocked from the market for the whole of 2016!
Remember: if someone calls you out of the blue to sell you something that sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
